SQORE’s “reGENERATION” EP

You know when an emotion starts to creep up and you’re not sure what’s happening, how to respond, or where it’s stemming from? How all of a sudden, on a gorgeous sunny summer day – the sky almost instantly changes, shifting all the energies around you. The idea of how the day was “supposed” to go suddenly is moving in a completely different direction, leaving you with weary thoughts and tv static in your mind. This is a parallel to how the new sonic undertaking by local DIY ambient-electronic wiz, SQORE, starts their new EP – “reGENERATION”.

STATIC[growth]

“STATIC[growth]” begins like a congregating cloud approaching unexpectedly, waiting to burst its form onto a scene. The stretching of tones and wavering of eeriness pulls you into the world of SQORE, returning with their first collection of work since their collaborative worldly record – “Methods of Motion”. SQORE (Em Sgouros) has been traveling across the states in their van, collecting field sounds and gaining perspective on what it means to make things. Em has always been one to chase exploration, to challenge, to go against the grain to find their truth.

INTERNAL///VS.EXTERNAL[forces]

This quality shines with length on “INTERNAL///VS.EXTERNAL[forces]”. How can we balance the external to harmonize with the internal? The 5 patterns lift us off on the vibraphone, SQORE’s octopus-like ability to make arpeggios leak droney ambivalence – cut by words on what we all struggle with in order to avoid the knife of fear. It catches up to you one way or another…the piece encourages us to let go.

Page out of reGENERATION Zine by SQORE

“unFILTERED[joy]” is a shining star in this world of texturized dances and swirly skies – combining thoughts and emotions that build up the perfect storms we desperately continue to prepare for. The blips and bloops start bubbly like the froth on the edge of the ocean, foaming at your feet, alluring you to move inward. The second half, a piano piece strong enough to stand all on its own, is tacked onto the same track – so beautifully unexpected. In this final composition, it serves us a simplistic singular form of joy, leaving us with a reminder to sit back and watch our story unfold. We can’t predict what’s coming, we can only watch it happen.

“reGENERATION” is a combination of SQORE’s magical ability to make you float while simultaneously encouraging you to feel. The EP is paired with a graphic zine made by the artist – filled with elements of their travels, internal fabrics and quirky perspectives. You can purchase and listen to the EP exclusively on Bandcamp whilst the Zine will only be available directly from the artist. As SQORE continues to grow and expand on what truly matters to them, platforms like Spotify & Apple Music are being left in the shadows. This work is proudly released via Ambient Pasta Records, we artists are working together to discover ways to share and enjoy the release of our creations with intention. So please: come to a show, buy the EP, pick up a zine, go for a walk, & most of all; Listen 🙂
